Restraints:

  • Storage and Transportation Challenges May Hamper the Market Growth

Storing and transporting these chemicals poses a major restraint for the aerosol propellant market. Aerosol products usually use flammable or volatile propellants, and another propellant, and need to be stored in pressurized containers, which need to follow strict safety protocols for handling, storage, and transit. Such requirements frequently translate into increased logistical expenses, specialized infrastructure, and compliance costs. Moreover, as distribution is often hazardous (leakage, explosion, or temperature sensitive), it can be challenging in supply chains, especially in poor transport networks or extreme natural conditions. Such matters may limit the expansion of the market, thus affecting the smaller manufacturers and distributors.

Opportunities:

  • Development of Innovative Packaging Technologies Creates an Opportunity in the Market

The aerosol propellant market is likely to create incremental opportunities for innovative packaging technologies. Dual chamber systems, bag-on-valve technology, and smart dispensing will result in more functional, safe, and sustainable aerosol products. As these innovations enhance the shelf stability of products and minimize propellant wastage, they also align with increasing consumer preference for precision, convenience, and sustainable options. With the broad-spectrum of applications for aerosol-based products from personal care, healthcare, and hygiene to household care as aerosol propellant companies innovate advanced packaging to set their products apart and to comply with environmental regulations, a rapid increase of adoption will be noticed further leading to the increasing industry rates, which drive the aerosol propellant market trends.

In June 2024, Sonoco Products Acquisition of Eviosys for packaging product manufacturer Sonoco Products announced its deal to acquire Eviosys, a European food canmaker, for USD 3.9 billion in cash and stock. The acquisition represents a strategic increase in size, scope, and scale for Sonoco's metal and aerosol packaging business.

SPECS was launched last year by the Government of India and offers a 25% financial incentive on capital expenditure for electronic components, semiconductors, and packaging technologies. In September 2023, 32 applications for projects amounting to USD 1.35 billion were approved to make efforts to increase domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Segmentation Analysis:

By Product

Hydrocarbons held the largest Aerosol Propellant market share, around 65%, in 2024 owing to their low cost, high efficiency, and ready availability. Due to their fine propellant capabilities and universal compatibility with a variety of formulations, they are also widely used as propellants in applications, such as personal care products, household cleaners, and industrial sprays. Low toxicity and good solvency of hydrocarbons (propane, butane, and isobutane) also make them the propellants of choice over alternatives, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or compressed gases. While more manufacturers increasingly look at greener solutions for products, their established supply chain and track record makes them a leader in the market.

DME held a significant aerosol propellant market share due to its good environmental and performance properties. DME, a clean-burning, non-toxic, non-ozone-depleting compound, is emerging as a sustainable substitute for conventional hydrocarbon propellants. It is an efficient bottler for consistent spray patterns in products from personal care to industrial applications due to its excellent solubility and vapor pressure. Furthermore, with rising regulatory pressure to curb greenhouse gas emissions and transition to greener alternatives, the aerosol propellant market has been witnessing mass adoption of DME, making it one of the potential growth drivers.

By Application

The personal Care segment held the largest market share, around 38%, in 2024 as aerosol products are extensively used in personal care applications (deodorants, hair sprays, shaving foams, body sprays, and propellant spray). Aerosol formulations are gaining preference among consumers for convenience, controlled application, and the ability to deliver a fine and uniform mist that enhances consumer experience. However, the increasing significance of personal grooming and hygiene due to increasing disposable incomes as well as migration toward urban areas has increased the demand for aerosol personal care products globally.

The household segment holds a significant market share in the Aerosol Propellant market. It is owing to the high consumption level of household products, such as air fresheners, insecticides, disinfectants, liquefied gas propellant and cleaning sprays. Aerosol technology provides formulations that can be applied easily, quickly, and uniformly, helping consumers to make household chores more convenient and effective. Rising prevalence of disinfectant and cleaning aerosols has been attributed to the eruption of hygiene and sanitization consciousness post-pandemics.
